Obituary for John Whitzel Smith

Mr. John Whitzel Smith, age 71, of Oldtown, Kentucky, entered into rest, Tuesday morning, September 24, 2019, at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Kentucky.

He was born September 18, 1948, in Nicholas County, West Virginia, a son of the late Oscar and Opal Neace Smith. John moved with his family to the farm in Rattlesnake in Oldtown, Kentucky, in 1963.

He was of the United Baptist Faith and retired from CSX Transportation, where he enjoyed wood working, doing puzzles, hunting and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

John is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Patty Baier Smith; one son, John Wesley Smith (Cindy) of Greenup, Kentucky; two daughters, Missy Smith and Jennifer Clark (Michael), all of Greenup, Kentucky; two grandchildren, Rebecca Smith and Michael Clark; and four sisters, Evelyn Potter (Donnie) of Greenup, Kentucky, Ellen Reyes (Santana) of Arlington, Texas, Scarlet Geiger (Hal) of Wisconsin, and Emma Kennebeck (Richard) of Cincinnati, Ohio. He also leaves many other family members and friends who will sadly miss him.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 27, 2019, at Grayson Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Grayson, Kentucky, with Elder Robbie Baier, Elder Scott Baier, and Elder Louie Baier officiating. Burial will follow in the Smith Cemetery in Oldtown, Kentucky.

Friends may visit from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, September 26, 2019, and after 9 a.m. on Friday at Grayson Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 49 McCoy Road, Grayson, Kentucky 41143.

John Smith, Lou Felty, Michael Clark, Mikey Clark, Gabe Geiger and Jarrod Stephens will serve as pallbearers.
